چکیده

Anthropogenic organoarsenic compounds which were used such as agrochemicals, pesticides, and herbicides can have a potential as a source of arsenic pollution in water. In the process, the adsorption of arsenic onto mineral surface in soil may play an important role to affect arsenic distribution in solid-water interface. However, adsorption structures of organoarsenic compounds on the iron-(oxyhydr)oxides are not well known. In this study, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy was employed to know the adsorption structure of methyland phenyl-substituted organoarsenic compounds (methylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), phenylarsonic acid (PAA), and diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) onto ferrihydrite which can be a strong adsorbent of arsenic. EXAFS analysis suggests that the formation of inner-sphere surface complex for all organoarsenic compounds with ferrihydrite regardless of the organic functional groups and the number of substitution. The As-Fe distances are around 3.27 Ǻ, which suggests both monoand bi-dentate inner-sphere complexes by DFT calculations. The corresponding coordination numbers (CNs) are less than two, suggesting that coexistence of both structures of inner-sphere complexes.

XAFS Study of Arsenical Nickel Hydroxide

To Investigate the role played by nickel co-ions in contributing to the stability of arsenic, fluorescence XAFS measurements at both arsenic K-edge and nickel K-edge, respectively, on amorphous arsenical nickel hydroxide, crystalline arsenical nickel hydroxide, and annabergite reference compounds have been carried out. The XAFS results indicate that the arsenic-bearing nickel hydroxides have a ...

Adsorption of Phenolic Compounds onto the Activated Carbon Synthesized from Pulp and Paper Mill Sludge: Equilibrium Isotherm, Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Mechanism Studies

A new activated carbon was produced from pulp and paper mill sludge as a low cost precursor via chemical activation by zinc chloride. The activated carbon was successfully used for the adsorption of phenol and two of its derivatives, i.e. 2-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the prepared activated carbon demonstrated high textural properties for the s...

The Use of XAFS to Distinguish between Inner- and Outer-Sphere Lead Adsorption Complexes on Montmorillonite.

Adsorption mechanisms of Pb on montmorillonite were investigated by conducting equilibrium and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy studies. Data from the batch equilibrium studies indicate that Pb could be adsorbing via two mechanisms, depending on ionic strength. At low ionic strength (I = 0.006 M) Pb adsorption is pH-independent: 97% of the available Pb was removed from soluti...

Kinetic controls on Cu and Pb sorption by ferrihydrite.

Metal partitioning in ferrihydrite suspensions may reach equilibrium only after a long reaction time. To determine key factors controlling the kinetics, we measured Cu and Pb uptake as a function of ferrihydrite morphology, reaction temperature, metal competition, and fulvic acid concentration over a period of 2 months. X-ray microscopy, which was used to probe ferrihydrite morphology in suspen...

A predictive model (ETLM) for As(III) adsorption and surface speciation on oxides consistent with spectroscopic data

Arsenic(III) adsorption reactions are thought to play a critical role in the mobility of arsenic in the environment. It is the nature of the As(III) surface species that must be known on a wide variety of minerals and over a range of pH, ionic strength and surface coverage in order to be able to predict adsorption behavior. EXAFS and XANES spectroscopic studies have identified bidentate, binucl...
